These setup and usage instructions assume that you have working knowledge of the WordPress publishing platform. For more detailed information on how to use WordPress, please refer to the official WordPress documentation codex.

NOTE: WordPress does not provide import functionality for theme options, custom fields, required plugins or other settings. This means that even with the theme sample data file, you will still need to adjust your theme options and most likely add content according to the setup and usage instructions below. Adding & Managing Custom Menus

Most current WordPress themes include custom menu support which allows you to configure your theme menus however you like. You can add custom links, pages and/or categories to any custom menu you create. Follow the instructions below for more information on how to create and mange custom menus.

  1. Log into your WordPress Admin, select "Appearance" and then "Menus".
  2. Click the "+" symbol to create a new custom menu.
  3. Add custom links, pages or categories by clicking "Add to Menu" within each option.
  4. Click "Save Menu" to save your custom menu.
  5. Within the left hand column, assign your new custom menu to any of the theme locations provided.

Theme Installation

All WordPress themes can be installed and activated one of two ways. Choose your method below to continue.


Theme Installation via FTP

If you are having issues with the automatic WordPress admin installation method above, it is recommended that you use the following traditional FTP installation instructions.

  1. Download and unzip the theme, if you haven't already.
  2. Login to your server using any compatible FTP client.
  3. Upload the entire theme folder ( e.g. "theme-name" ) to your "wp-content/themes" directory.
  4. Log into your WordPress Admin, select "Appearance" and then "Themes".
  5. Under the "Appearance" menu, click "Themes" and select the theme you wish to activate.

Theme Installation via the WordPress Admin

This is the installation method recommend for most WordPress users. This method can be a bit buggy at times depending on your server setup, so if you are having issues, try the traditional FTP installation method described within the next section.

  1. Log into your WordPress Admin, select "Appearance" and then "Themes".
  2. After the page loads, select "Install Themes" and then "Upload".
  3. Click "Choose File" and browse for "theme-name.zip".
  4. Click "Install Now" and wait for the page to reload.
  5. Under the "Appearance" menu, click "Themes" and select the theme you wish to activate.
TV Elements Options Setup

The TV Elements theme is integrated with the WordPress theme Customizer (Appearance->Customize), which allows you easy control over the theme options, homepage setup, etc., all within one location.

  • Site Colors:

    Within the “Site Colors” tab you can set your theme’s main site colors, including Background color (which fills your background), Primary color (for main fonts and links), and Secondary color.

  • Header Image:

    Here you may choose to upload your own header image or site logo.

  • Background Image:

    Within this tab, you can easily upload your own background image. You may choose to display the background image in different ways as well. For example, you may choose to tile a background image, center the image, or set the image to fixed or scroll, depending on how you would like it to display.

  • TV Elements->General Options:

    Here you can set various settings for the TV Elements theme; some of which include setting your header color (dark/light), choosing the category that you would like to display on your Portfolio page template, and setting a default featured image.

  • TV Elements->Featured Video:

    The homepage of TV Elements features a large video background, with a centered graphic logo. These options are managed through this section. The Featured Video Image option is what will load first, it is best to upload the first frame of your video as the image, this will create a less noticeable transition when your video loads.There are three available video filetypes that you can use: MP4, OGV, and WebM. To enable video, paste the URL of the file inside one of these options (depending on the filetype of the URL).

    The Featured Image Overlay is shown above the video/featured image, you can upload your own logo/graphic here.

  • TV Elements->Social Icons:

    To enable the social icons to appear in the footer of the TV Elements theme, fill out the desired social inputs in this section.

  • TV Elements->Homepage:

    Here you can set various settings for the TV Elements theme; like the Featured Post (which will show the title and excerpt of the selected post), the latest posts category (if none is selected, latest posts will appear), and the number of posts to show on the homepage.

Adding a Portfolio Page

TV Elements features a custom Portfolio Page Template that will allow you to choose a set of posts to feature in a filtered layout.

Adding the Portfolio Page:

  1. Create posts, set categories for these posts, add featured images, videos, etc.
  2. Create a new page, and set this page’s template to “Portfolio”.
  3. Navigate to Appearance->Customize->TV Elements->General Options to select the Portfolio Category that you would like to display on the Portfolio page that you’ve created.
  4. Note: The categories shown on the portfolio page will be the child categories of the theme option you chose above.
Importing Included Theme Sample Data

TV Elements includes sample data ( sample-data.xml ) that can be imported to populate a fresh WordPress install with sample content ( posts, pages, thumbnails, etc. ) so that you can get a better idea as to how each theme works.

  1. Click “Tools” and then “Import” to launch the WordPress Import Tool.
  2. After the page loads, click “WordPress” from the list of compatible import platforms.
  3. Click “Choose File” to select the “sample-data.xml” import file found within any theme folder.
  4. Click “Upload File and Import” to import the sample data and then follow the on screen instructions.
