These setup and usage instructions assume that you have working knowledge of the WordPress publishing platform. For more detailed information on how to use WordPress, please refer to the official WordPress documentation codex.

NOTE: WordPress does not provide import functionality for theme options, custom fields, required plugins or other settings. This means that even with the theme sample data file, you will still need to adjust your theme options and most likely add content according to the setup and usage instructions below. Installing Your Theme

There are a number of ways to install a WordPress theme:

- WordPress admin
- S/FTP
- Hosting control panel (cPanel used as a specific example)

The recommended installation method for most people is through the WordPress admin, though some theme updates may require the use of S/FTP or your hosting control panel. Instructions for all three options can be found in the Using Themes Codex article.


Managing Custom Menus

Modern WordPress themes include native custom menu support which allows you to configure your theme menus however you like in a convenient drag-and-drop interface. With a custom menu you can easily add custom links, pages, and categories to your navigation menu. Follow the instructions below for more information on how to create and mange custom menus.

  1. Log into your WordPress Admin (e.g. yoursite.com/wp-admin), and navigate to Appearance > Menus.
  2. By default your pages will be listed, so click 'create new menu' to begin setting up your menu
  3. On the left you will see options to add 'Pages', 'Custom Links', and 'Categories' to your menu.
  4. Once done, click 'Save Menu' to save your custom menu, then under 'Menu Settings' check the box beside your desired menu location.

WordPress Customizer

The customizer page is where you will find all the theme specific configuration, customization and featured content options. Within your WordPress admin, click "Appearance" and then "Customizer" to load the options page. There will be on screen descriptions and instructions for each option within the page explaining what the option is for and how to configure it. The customizer page and included options will most likely be different for each individual theme, but the concept is the same for all themes.

Homepage Configuration

The home page can be configured with either a standard or full width (as shown on the demo) intro including a featured image. To get you’re home page to display like the theme demo, follow these steps:

  1. Create a Page, give it a title, content, and set a featured image.
  2. Go to Appearance > Customize
  3. Find the Theme section and set the Page for Intro option to the page you just created.
  4. In the Theme section, set the Intro Format option to Full Width.
  5. Go to Settings > Reading.
  6. Set the Front page displays option to Your latest posts.

 

Your front page should now display your latest posts with a large full width image and content above it, as shown in the theme demo.

Post Formats

Clear News includes 3 different types of post options called “Post Formats” including Standard, Photo, Video and Audio post formats. Continue reading below for more information on how to publish new posts for each of these formats. All post formats are published using the same process:

  1. Login to your WordPress admin and select “Posts”.
  2. Click “Add New” to begin creating a new post.
  3. Add your post title and post content.
  4. Within the right hand sidebar, choose at least one category or add a new category for your post to be published in.
  5. Within the right hand sidebar, find the “Format” box and click the type of post you would like to publish (e.g. “Standard”). Continue reading below for additional steps required for each individual post format.
  6. Click “Publish” to publish your post.
Standard “Text Only” Posts

Standard “text only” posts do no require any additional steps.

Photo Posts

Photo posts will display any selected photo prominently at the top of your post. After choosing the “Photo” post format, follow the steps below to complete your post:

  1. Within the right hand sidebar, find the “Featured Image” box and select a featured image for your photo post.
Video Posts

Video posts will display any embeddable video prominently at the top of your post. After choosing the “Video” post format, follow the steps below to complete your post:

  1. Enter your video URL (e.g. “https://vimeo.com/28700039″) in the field provided (above the post editor).
  2. Within the right hand sidebar, find the “Featured Image” box and select a featured image for your video.
Creating Posts With Featured Thumbnail Images

Most themes require that you add a featured thumbnail image for each post that you publish. The featured image is used to generate post thumbnails for gallery style layouts as well as featued content areas within the theme. Follow the step-by-step instructions below for writing posts with featured images.

  1. Within your WordPress admin, expand the “Posts” tab, then select “Add New“.
  2. Create a title for your post and add your post content within the post editor.
  3. Within the right hand sidebar, find the “Featured Image” box and click “Set Featured Image”.
  4. After the pop-up dialog box loads, you have an option to select any image on your computer or an existing image within your WordPress Media Library.
  5. Choose your image and then click “Use as Featured Image” within the pop-up dialog box.
